Science/Social Studies

 

The students will be studying Science and Social Studies three times a week as well as visiting the Discovery Center. We will also be incorporating elements of Art and creative expression in Science and Social Studies. Below you can see what themes and elements of Science and Social Studies we will be covering each month.  

February

Theme: Buoyancy 

Content:

1. Know the cycle from a seed to a flower to a fruit

2. Compare food from a garden to a farm

3. How can food make us healthy

4. Sink and Float 

 

Objectives:

1. Students learn the various fruits that exist and how each one is important for us. 

2. Students learn to distinguish healthy and unhealthy food. 

3. Students learn to predict if food objects will sink or float.

Discovery Center: Experiments 

January 

Theme: Plants

Content:

1. Plants 

 

 

Objectives:

1. The life cycle of a plant

2. Parts of a plant/tree

3. Anatomy of a leaf

4. What makes the leaves change color?

5. Learn plants need water and sunlight to survive

 

Activities: 

1. fish, sharks 

2. whales, dolphins, 

3. jelly fish, squid

 

Discovery Center: Plant their own cup bean sprouts in the classroom. Walk around the school to observe different types of plants and collect different leaves for comparison.

December 

Theme: Christmas

Content:

1. Seasons 

 

Objectives:

1. Learn about different seasons: spring, summer, fall, winter- Why do seasons happen? 

2. Learn why each country in the world will not be in the same season at the same time. Thailand has no snow. 

Activities: 

Picture cards of different seasons

 

Make snowman art with cotton 

 

Discovery Center: Making candles, playing with snow

November

Theme: Underwater

Content:

1. Under the Sea 

 

 

Objectives:

1. Classifies different animals that live under the sea

2.Learn fun facts about these animals

3. Categorizing ocean animals that live underwater vs those that live above water. 

 

Activities: 

1. fis, sharks 

2. whales, dolphins, 

3. jelly fish, squid

October

Theme: Insects and Animals

Content:

1. Farm Animals-cow, hen, and pig

2. Animal homes

3. Vets take care of pets

 

Objectives:

1. Identify pets

2. Identify farm animals

3. Know animals homes and habitats

4. Talk about an animal doctor or vet

5. Discuss animals of the farm vs the rain forest 

 

Activities: 

Bring pictures of pets

Act as a vet 

Look at farm animals; look at animals products and uses by means of pictures. 

 

Discovery Center: Observe the continued growth of caterpillars and butterflies. 

September

Theme: Animals and Insects

Content:

1. Insects

2. Life Cycles

 

Objectives:

1. To learn about life cycles- butterfly, frogs, fish, bird

2. To be able to classifies different types of animals and insects that inhabit the earth.

3. To know basic facts about animals and insects

4. Students will know how to observe and describe

similarities and differences in the appearance and

behaviors of animals and insects

 

Activities: 

• Earthworms

• Caterpillar - butterfly

• Lady bugs

Theme: All About Me

Content:

1. All About Me

2. Families Make Us Special

3. My Face

4. My Favorite Toy

 

Objectives:

1. To know the number of family members

2. To discuss and share family values

3. To know parts of the face

 

Activities: 

*Write Family members and draw pictures to illustrate

*Write parts of the face and draw pictures.

*Use vocabulary to describe feelings
